Diseases related to gastrointestinal tract are known as gastrointestinal disorders. Gastrointestinal disorders include gastro esophageal reflux disease, hiatal hernia, esophagitis, gastritis, peptic ulcer disease, Zollinger-Ellison syndrome, ulcerative colitis, and inflammatory bowel disease. Gastro esophageal reflux disease is a digestive disease in which the stomach content flows back in the esophagus. Symptoms of GERD are heartburn, dry cough, chest pain, regurgitation of food, dysphagia, hoarseness, and chest pain. Risk factors for GERD are asthma, obesity, pregnancy, and diabetes. Hiatal hernia is a condition in which stomach is pushed upward through the diaphragm. Symptoms of hiatal hernia are heartburn, difficulty in swallowing, belching and abdominal pain. The risk factors for hiatal hernia are age and obesity. The next disorder is esophagitis which is an inflammation of esophagus. Symptoms of esophagitis are heart burn, acid regurgitation, pain while swallowing, and chest pain. Risk factors for esophagitis are excessive fatty meals and dietary factors such as caffeine. Another gastrointestinal disorder is peptic ulcers in which sores are developed inside the stomach lining. Symptoms of peptic ulcers are heartburn, nausea, and stomach pain. Risk factors are smoking, stress, spicy food, and alcohol consumption. In case of Zollinger-Ellison syndrome, tumors are formed inside pancreas, which cause secretion of gastrin. Symptoms are diarrhea, nausea, burning sensation, and vomiting. The next important gastrointestinal disorder is ulcerative colitis in which there is inflammation of colon and formation of sores in the lining of colon. Symptoms are weight loss, rectal pain, abdominal pain, diarrhea and fever. Risk factors for ulcerative colitis are age and family history. These gastrointestinal disorders can be diagnosed with the use of smart pills.

Smart pill is an ingestible capsule which consists of miniaturized electronics such as cameras, trackers, patches and sensors which helps in diagnosing and monitoring gastrointestinal disorders. This technology will revolutionize the gastrointestinal diagnosis field. The smart pill has great flexibility and can deliver the drug in desired location with required rate and dose. It can also monitor gastrointestinal environment. The therapies which cannot be delivered by regular means can be delivered by smart pills. Smart pills will help in monitoring various parameters such as pressure, drug adherence, temperature and pH in patients. These pills are made of bioinert polymers which will remain chemically and physically stable during storage of drug. These polymers are impermeable to gastric fluids. The drug from the smart pill is released by active or passive mechanism. In active mechanism the delivery of the drug can be controlled better. Further, the camera smart pill can be used in diagnosis for gastrointestinal disorder where ultrasound is ineffective. Non-dissolvable smart pills will enhance the diagnostic performance.

The major factor that drives the growth of smart pills market is increase in the prevalence of gastrointestinal diseases. The other important factor which will drive the growth of this market is increase in the geriatric population. For instance, according to WHO, in 2015, 900 million people were 60 years of age or older and this number is expected to reach up to 2 billion by 2050.  However, high cost of smart pills can hamper the growth of the smart pills markets. Technological advancements will also fuel the growth of this market. For instance, in August 2014, CapsoVision launched CapsoCam SV-2 which is a smart capsule with hallmark 360 degree for panoramic lateral viewing.

The key strategy followed by the major players in the smart pills market is product innovation to gain more market share. For instance, in March 2016, Medtronic received FDA approval for PillCam COLON 2 Capsule for an expanded indication. It is approved for detection of colon polyps. With the launch of PillCam COLON 2 Capsule, Medtronic will gain more market share.

The major players in the smart pills market are Fujifilm Holdings Corporation, CapsoVision, Inc., Olympus Corporation, Given Imaging Ltd., and Proteus Digital Health, Inc.

Market Modeling and Forecasting

We use epidemiology and capital equipment-based models to forecast market size of different segments at country and regional level.

  • Epidemiology-based Forecasting Model: This method uses epidemiology data gathered through various publications and from physicians to estimate population of patients, flow of treatment of individual disease and therapies. The data collected through this method includes statics on incidence of disease, population suffering from disease, and treatment population. This method is used to understand:
  • Number of patients for particular device or medical procedure and
  • Repeated use of particular device depending on health and condition of patient
  • Capital-based Forecasting Model: This method of forecasting is based on number of replacements, installed-based and new sales of capital equipment used in various healthcare and diagnostic centers. These three parameters are calculated and forecast is developed. Installation base is calculated as average number of units per facility; while sales for particular year is calculated from number of new and replace units. Secondary data is collected through various supply chain intermediaries and opinion leaders to arrive at installation and sales rate. These techniques help our analysts in validating market and developed market estimates and forecast.

We do forecast on basis of several parameters such as market drivers, market opportunities, industry trends government regulations, raw materials supply and trade dynamics to ensure relevance of forecast with market scenario. With increasing need to granulized information, we used bottom-up methodology for forecasting where we evaluate each regional segment differently and combined all forecast to develop final market forecast.
